Executive Director Mark Bernard Statement on Project 2025

For far too long now, the race between President Biden and former President Trump has been almost exclusively focused on President Biden’s ability to handle the rigors of a campaign and the job of being president. Regardless of how individuals feel about President Biden’s abilities, it has been clear for some time now that questions regarding the president’s competency would remain the top, and perhaps only issue, for the reminder of the campaign. It has also been clear from consistent polling over the past few years that a large majority of Americans would prefer people other than Joe Biden and Donald Trump at the top of the Republican and Democratic Party tickets.

With President Biden’s unselfish and courageous decision to step aside, it is our hope that our country will now begin to focus on the policy differences between both parties. This will allow all of us to make informed decisions as to which candidate and which political party has the best interests of hard-working AFSCME members in their hearts and minds. Yesterday, our International Union determined through a unanimous vote that Vice President Kamala Harris is the best choice for our union. Of course, some members will disagree with that decision, and we respect their right to do so. However, if we all do our homework and do not fall victim to the politics of distraction, I believe most will agree with our endorsement and when it comes time to vote in November, the decision will be easy.

A good way to start focusing on issues, is to review the so-called Project 2025 Plan, which openly charts a course of action that Donald Trump and the conservative movement plans to take if they are successful in November. Among the goals of Project 2025 is the elimination of public sector unions.

We urge all AFSCME members to spend the final months of this campaign studying the issues.
